Prior to colonization, indigenous people in Mexico and around the world developed their own systems of government. A method commonly used is the ‘talk circle’, which encompasses discussion, ritual, tradition, and community collective principles for decision making.
Goals:
To teach participants how to create a safe and open environment for
communication in a group setting.
For participants to learn how to integrate aspects of the Mexica talk circle into
other areas of their lives.
For participants to gain a broader understanding of one another within a
community setting.
Workshop Outline:
Traditional ritual items such as the ‘talking stick’ and sage will be
used in the talk circle. Facilitator, Deniz Lopez, will discuss the purpose, importance, and intention for the use of these natural elements.
The "rules" of the particular talk circle will be shared to the group.
The talk circle will begin its first round with each participant having the opportunity to speak
The topics and themes of the first round of discussion will guide the second round of facilitated talking.
The rounds will continue for a predetermined amount of time.
The facilitator will ask the participants what they gathered and felt from what was shared in the rounds of discussion.
The facilitator will present scenarios to demonstrate how these talk circle elements can be implemented into their personal conversations and situations at work, home, and relationships.
Talk circles can be personal, specific, broad, can be used as a way to facilitate conflict and more. Ask me about how to create a Talk Circle that fits your wants/needs.
